NXITY to develop new Operation Optimization platform for Beijing District Heating Group

NXITY has been engaged by Beijing District Heating Group (BDHG) to develop a new Operation Optimization platform. The platform will comprise a combination of modernized and digitalized facilities, new optimization tools and strengthened operation organization. As Chinas largest district heating utility, BDHG is covering a heating area greater than 230 million m2 corresponding to a heat demand larger than 9 TW. BDHG constantly strives to improve the district heating system of Beijing and to be the role model for district heating enterprises in China. After years of hard work, succeeding to significantly improve the local environment in Beijing by applying solutions like; waste heat recovery, DeNox-technologies, integration of renewable energy, etc., the time has come to take the next step: Optimization and Digitalization.

NXITY is taking departure from the core competences of the company (Energy and ICT) when developing a new Operation Optimization platform that meets the expectations of BDHG and suits the local conditions. NXITY has extensive experience in developing digital district heating schemes and have unique expertise within Operation Optimization and Management of modern district heating systems (Smart District Heating and District Heating 4.0).

NXITY will empower BDHG as advisors and act as PMC during the implementation phase. Capacity building will be provided through training and workshops for operation and maintenance personnel, local management and customer service functions.

NXITY modernize District Heating system in Jinan

NXITY has been engaged by Jinan District Heating Company to modernize district heating systems in Shandong province. The first project in Jinan, implemented during summer 2018, will serve as a demonstration project for future modernization projects in Shandong province. Jinan District Heating Company covers a total heating area of approximately 100 million m2 in Shandong province, corresponding to a peak heating demand of approximately 4 GW. Jinan District Heating Company has great ambitions to modernize their district heating systems in Shandong province, and has put an organization of national and international specialists in place to focus on these matters. The demonstration project covers heat exchanger station, secondary distribution system, building installations and control systems.

NXITY is taking departure from the core competences of the company (Energy and ICT) and design a modernization concept which meets the expectations of Jinan District Heating Company, and that suits the local conditions of the district systems. NXITY is part of a project team put together by Jinan District Heating Company comprising Swedish and Chinese suppliers of engineering services, various district heating equipment and control systems. NXITY acts as PMC, taking lead of the project implementation, liaising with the project owner’s organization and coordinating with all suppliers throughout the project.

Furthermore, NXITY provides capacity building through training and workshops for operation and maintenance personnel, local management and customer service functions. Dialogues with local authorities and end-consumers will be an important component of the project to prioritize organizational improvement measures for Jinan District Heating Company in order to improve the heat supply services towards the end-consumers.

NXITY modernize District Heating system in Tianjin

NXITY has been engaged by Huanhui Group, to modernize a district heating system in Tianjin covering approximately 20 000 dwellings. The project covers modernization of heat source plant, primary distribution network, secondary distribution networks and overall control systems.

NXITY has taken departure from the core competences of the company (Energy and ICT) and designed a modernization concept which meets the expectations of Huanhui Group and that suits the local conditions of the district system in Tianjin. Together with Huanhui Group, NXITY has put a project team together comprising Danish, Swedish and Chinese suppliers of engineering services, various district heating equipment, Cloud solutions, SCADA and control systems. NXITY acts as PMC, taking lead of the project implementation and coordinating with all suppliers throughout the project.

As of the heating season 2017/2018, the secondary systems have been modernized, and the heat source plant and substations have been put into automatic control with weather compensation features. During 2018, focus will be put on further energy efficiency measures and finalizing modernization of the primary distribution network.

Furthermore, NXITY has provided capacity building through training and workshops for operation and maintenance personnel, local management and customer service functions. Dialogues with local authorities and end-consumers has been an important component of the project to prioritize organizational improvement measures for Huanhui Group to improve the heat supply services to the citizens of Tianjin.

NXITY is excited about the cooperation with Huanhui Group, and are looking forward continuing the modernization campaign, optimizing Huanhui Group’s district heating systems around China.

NXITY to improve the District Heating systems of Xian

NXITY has been engaged by Xian District Heating Company to improve the district heating systems in Xian. The district heating systems of Xian District Heating company has a total heat load of approximately 2500 MW, divided in four main district heating systems; Taihua, Yandong, Chengbei and Chengqu. The district heating systems are partly physically connected but have in the past been hydraulically separated during normal operation. The systems will be converted into a great pool operated system; one of NXITY’s specialities.

NXITY will carry out comprehensive thermal and hydraulic evaluations of the district heating systems, with focus on technical upgrade and operation optimization. With the in-house experience of optimizing the heat supply in the world’s largest and most complex district heating systems in Northern Europe and China, NXITY will provide modernization plans and operation manuals that will serve as guidelines for the development and operation of Xian District Heating company’s district heating systems.

During the heating season 2017/2018, the focus has been on Taihua and Yandong district heating systems. Taihua and Yandong district heating systems have a heat load of 350 MW and 770 MW, respectively. The technical level of the two district heating systems is different, which require tailor-made modernization measures for each of the systems. In order to get the basics right, NXITY carried out seamless thermal-, hydraulic steady-state and hydraulic transient-state analysis of the two systems. Following the work with Taihua and Yandong district heating system, NXITY and Xian District Heating Company will continue with modernization plans and operation manuals for Chengbei and Chengqu district heating systems. Furthermore, NXITY will provide advice on implementation of operation optimization solutions.

The work is carried out in close cooperation between NXITY, Xian District Heating Company’s Technical department, Operation departments and Design institute. The characteristics of the project goes perfectly in hand with NXITY’s role, being the bridge between Chinese utility companies’ organization and their projects, and between international know-how and the local Chinese district heating market.

The Danish company ENFOR™ established in 2006 has a solid operational track record and is successfully serving customers globally providing forecasting and optimization solutions for the energy sector. Their client base of utilities, energy traders, transmission and distribution system operators use ENFOR™ solutions for forecasting of wind power, solar power, electricity and heat demand as well as optimization of district heating systems.

NXITY as a trusted partner to ENFOR™ on the Chinese market is proud to present the product line within Heat Solutions™ (formerly known as PRESS™). Heat Solutions™ is an integrated portfolio of forecasting and optimization solutions for the district heating sector, taking a natural place in NXITY’s smart heating offer. The solution consists of MetFor™, which delivers locally-calibrated weather forecasts, HeatFor™ which provides heat demand forecasts and HeatTO™, which provides temperature optimization of district heating systems. The solution reduce heat losses and thereby reduce production costs, heat prices and CO2 emissions while increasing reliability of heat supply.

WHY DO YOU NEED HEAT SOLUTIONS™

Heat Solutions™ is a fully automated system, which makes it possible to manage the district heating supply more efficient and reliable. MetFor™ and HeatFor™ provide accurate weather and heat demand forecasts, allowing HeatTO™ to optimize the temperature level in the district heating system. The optimization of the supply temperature will ensure that the needs of the customers are met, while the supply temperature is reduced as much as possible. This will reduce heat losses, production costs and the heat price. An additional benefit is that the reduction in fuel consumption can reduce CO2 emissions and improve the green profile of district heating.

How does Heat Solutions™ work

The three sub-solutions work as an integrated system. MetFor™ makes a local calibrated weather forecast. It is based on 2-3 external weather forecasts which are weighted and combined with local weather measurements. The locally calibrated weather forecast is fed into HeatFor™ and combined with historical demand data in order to deliver an accurate heat demand forecast. Based on this heat demand forecast and online measurements from the heating network (flow, supply and return temperature), HeatTO™ optimizes the supply temperature to meet demand, while minimizing supply temperature.

Heat Solutions™ is based on self-learning algorithms that continuously self-calibrate and improve as they receive data from the district heating network, and thereby the system is fully automatic.

Ideally the solution is integrated with local online weather measurements, but can also run solely on meteorological forecasts. Heat Solutions™ is provided with a data validation module and a data interfaces which enable SCADA integration through text files, FTP, database access or web services. The data validation module ensures that data with errors is identified, corrected or replaced by other values. Heat Solutions™ can be delivered as a software package which is installed at the district heating operator or as a hosted solution at ENFOR™. In addition, the solution comes with various support and maintenance packages that can be tailor-made.
